Ugandan opposition leader still in hiding as feud with president’s son escalates

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine remains in hiding nearly three weeks after a disputed election, claiming to have escaped a raid on his home on January 16th. Wine, the main challenger to President Yoweri Museveni, alleges widespread fraud in the election, which extended Museveni's decades-long rule. While in hiding, Wine has been engaged in a social media feud with Museveni’s son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also Uganda’s military chief. Wine's wife reported that armed men assaulted her at their home while searching for him. Wine has been posting on social media, rejecting the election results and taunting the military for failing to find him.

Ugandan General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of President Yoweri Museveni, has sparked controversy with recent social media posts. Kainerugaba, seen by some as a potential successor to his father, threatened opposition leader Bobi Wine with castration after Wine disputed the results of the recent presidential election. Museveni, who has been in power for 40 years, won a seventh term in the election, which Wine alleges was rigged. Analysts describe an "unholy alliance" between Museveni, Kainerugaba, and Museveni's brother, Salim Saleh, suggesting a family belief in their right to rule Uganda. Kainerugaba's threatening tweets have since been deleted.
