China takes US crown on ranking of world’s fastest supercomputers

China's supercomputer, LineShine, has surpassed the US-based El Capitan to become the world's most powerful, according to the latest TOP500 list announced in Hamburg, Germany. Located at the National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen, LineShine achieved a performance of 2.198 exaflops, exceeding El Capitan by 20 percent. This marks the first time a Chinese system has topped the ranking since 2017. El Capitan, previously the top performer, is based at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The TOP500 list, organized by an emeritus professor at the University of Tennessee, highlights China's advanced computing capabilities despite US export restrictions on advanced chips.

This marks the first time since 2017 that a Chinese computer has topped the rankings, displacing the US's El Capitan. LineShine, located in Shenzhen, operates entirely on conventional CPUs and achieved 2.198 exaflops. Supercomputers like LineShine are crucial for complex tasks such as scientific research and simulations. The Top500 list is considered a measure of national technological capability, and the rankings show other US supercomputers also in the top positions, with Germany's Jupiter dropping to fifth.

Notably, LineShine is the first supercomputer to exceed two exaflops using only central processing units (CPUs), without the assistance of graphics processing units (GPUs). This marks China's return to the top of the TOP500 rankings for the first time since 2017.
