Pennsylvania confirms fifth measles-associated death as US outbreak grows
Pennsylvania has confirmed its fifth measles-associated death this year, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 943 across 39 counties. The latest fatality was an unvaccinated resident of Lancaster County. This marks the third measles-associated death in Lancaster County and the third recorded in Pennsylvania since August, the first such deaths in the state in 35 years. The number of confirmed infections in Pennsylvania has more than doubled since August. The state is experiencing a significant outbreak, with at least 176 hospitalizations reported. This surge contributes to the worst measles outbreak in the U.S. since 1991, a trend experts link to rising vaccine skepticism. Governor Josh Shapiro's administration is expanding vaccination efforts and public health outreach in response.
