Double beds, aircon and big-screen TVs: Indonesia suspends officials over luxury prison cells
Five Indonesian prison officials, including the Cibinong prison chief, have been suspended following a discovery of luxury accommodations for inmates. Investigators from Indonesia's ombudsman found an apartment-style compound at Cibinong prison near Jakarta, featuring air conditioning, big-screen TVs, sofas, and dining areas. The facilities, which resembled home stays rather than prison cells, were allegedly used by certain prisoners, raising concerns about preferential treatment through bribery. The buildings were originally intended for prison personnel but are being investigated for unauthorized conversion. This incident renews scrutiny of Indonesia's prison system, which has long faced allegations of corruption and overcrowding. Authorities are questioning prisoners and employees as part of the inquiry.
