Russia’s Putin hosts Myanmar leader, talks up energy projects
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Myanmar's junta chief-turned-president, Min Aung Hlaing, in Moscow on Tuesday. This visit marks Min Aung Hlaing's first trip to a non-neighboring country since becoming president in April, highlighting deepening ties between Russia and Myanmar amidst Western pressure. The leaders discussed various issues, with a particular focus on prospective energy deals. Putin stated that Russia is in talks with Myanmar regarding the construction of an oil refinery and hydrocarbon production and exploration, including on Myanmar's continental shelf. Prospects for supplying Russian liquefied natural gas to Myanmar were also discussed. Putin described Min Aung Hlaing as a friend of Russia and noted cooperation in sectors including energy, defense, and space exploration.
