Former Ecuadorian president imprisoned for corruption
Former Ecuadorian President Lenín Moreno has been sentenced to five years in prison for corruption, to be served under house arrest due to his age and disability. A court in Quito found Moreno and 19 others guilty of taking bribes from Chinese state-owned firm Sinohydro to secure a contract for the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric dam. Prosecutors alleged Sinohydro paid $76.1 million through shell companies to individuals involved in the deal. Moreno, who served as president from 2017 to 2021, denies the allegations and intends to appeal the verdict. His wife, daughter, and brother were also among those convicted.
