French court sentences 13 men over deadliest small-boat crossing to UK
A French court has sentenced 13 men for their involvement in the deadliest small-boat crossing to the UK in November 2021, which resulted in the deaths of 31 migrants. Six of the men were convicted of involuntary homicide and received prison sentences ranging from six to 10 years for organizing a dangerous crossing in an unseaworthy, overloaded boat lacking life jackets. The remaining seven defendants were found guilty of lesser charges and sentenced to up to four years in prison. The court stated the smugglers were motivated by greed, profiting from vulnerable individuals. The migrants, primarily Iraqi Kurds, drowned when their boat capsized in the English Channel. Investigations are ongoing for seven military personnel accused of failing to assist survivors.
