Pope Leo diagnosed with cancer after surgery to remove part of lung
Pope Leo XIV, 71, has been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma following surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. The Vatican announced that the 90-minute procedure at Rome's Gemelli hospital was successful and without complications. The Pope is recovering in his hospital room and is expected to remain there for a week, with all audiences through October 20 canceled. Doctors are awaiting further test results before discussing potential treatments like chemotherapy. The Vatican stated that the removal of the lung lobe was "radical," indicating an effort to eliminate all suspect tissue. The Pope had previously disclosed the discovery of a small nodule during his Sunday noon prayer.
