China-North Korea border bridge may do little to spur trade, experts say
China and North Korea recently opened the New Yalu River Bridge, a new 3km crossing connecting Dandong, China, and Sinuiju, North Korea. Officials from both countries expressed optimism that the bridge would significantly boost trade and economic cooperation. However, analysts are more cautious, citing international sanctions and North Korea's prioritization of security as major impediments to substantial trade growth. While the bridge could improve logistics, it does not remove existing sanctions. China remains North Korea's primary economic partner, accounting for a large percentage of its trade. The opening of this new bridge, which can handle heavier loads than the older Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, comes amid warming ties between Beijing and Pyongyang.
