Thousands flood Brussels streets as anti-austerity protests erupt into clashes with police
Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Brussels on Friday to protest the Belgian government's budget-tightening measures and the rising cost of living. While an estimated 30,000 participants, organized by labor unions, marched peacefully, a smaller group of young individuals clashed with police, throwing rocks and firecrackers and setting fires. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds. Union leaders stated that those involved in the unrest were not affiliated with their movement. The protests highlight social tensions, particularly concerning increased university tuition fees and the cost of essential services like education and public transport. Similar student protests and arrests have occurred recently in Liège.
