WW1 to Houthis: British jets for Saudi Arabia build on long military bond
The United Kingdom will deploy Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia in a defensive role against missile and drone attacks by Yemen's Houthis. This deployment marks the latest development in a military relationship between the UK and Saudi Arabia that predates the kingdom's founding in 1932, originating from a treaty signed during World War I. The UK will also provide an A400M transport aircraft and advisers, and extend air-to-air refuelling support. The decision comes amidst ongoing fighting in Yemen and recent Houthi attacks on Saudi facilities. UK-Saudi military ties began in the 1960s with arms deals, notably the Al-Yamamah agreement in the 1980s.
