Ammonium nitrate (NH₄NO₃) is a chemical compound commonly used as a fertilizer and in explosives. It has recently gained attention due to its involvement in significant and fatal incidents. In Beirut, Lebanon, the devastating explosion on August 4, 2020, which destroyed port silos and caused widespread damage, is still a subject of accountability discussions six years later, with an indictment yet to be issued. More recently, a truck collision in northern China's Inner Mongolia region on a Sunday resulted in a massive chemical blast. The truck was carrying ammonium nitrate, and the collision with another vehicle led to two fatalities and four injuries. These events highlight the volatile nature of ammonium nitrate and underscore the ongoing need for stringent safety protocols in its storage, transportation, and handling, especially given its dual use as an agricultural aid and an explosive component.
