Cyclospora cayetanensis

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that causes an intestinal illness called cyclosporiasis. This illness is characterized by watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, and fatigue. The parasite is transmitted through contaminated food or water, with outbreaks frequently linked to fresh produce, particularly imported fruits and vegetables. Recently, there has been a significant increase in reported cases, with over 1,000 individuals affected in Michigan alone. This surge in cases highlights the ongoing public health concern associated with Cyclospora and the importance of food safety measures. Health authorities continue to investigate the sources of contamination to prevent further spread and advise consumers on safe produce handling practices to mitigate the risk of infection, especially during warmer months when produce consumption is high.
