Ghost guns are firearms that are assembled from kits or individual parts, often purchased online, and crucially, lack serial numbers. This makes them untraceable by law enforcement. They are currently newsworthy due to their increasing presence in crime scenes. Recent events, such as a mass shooting at a Seattle food festival, highlight this issue, with police recovering both a ghost gun and a modified machine gun from the scene. A 15-year-old arrested in connection with the shooting was also found to be in possession of a ghost gun. The proliferation of these weapons poses a significant challenge to public safety and gun violence prevention efforts, as their untraceable nature complicates investigations and efforts to track firearm trafficking.
