Asian shares advanced Thursday, mirroring gains on Wall Street, with South Korea's Kospi index surging over 6%. This rise followed an announcement by the U.S. Treasury Department that it would at least double planned purchases of longer-term government debt. This move is expected to increase bond prices, lower yields, and ease pressure on stock markets. South Korea's Kospi saw significant gains, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix leading the charge after SK Hynix announced a substantial share buyback plan. Major Asian markets like Japan's Nikkei 225, Hong Kong's Hang Seng, and China's Shanghai Composite also posted gains. U.S. government bond yields fell in response to the Treasury's announcement, alleviating investor concerns about rising yields.

Yields have risen in recent months over growing concerns about inflation stemming from the monthslong war in Iran and ballooning government debt, among other factors. The yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury fell to nearly 4.64% from 4.71% on Tuesday, although it’s still well above its levels from before the start of the war in Iran. The 30-year Treasury yield fell to 5.18% on Thursday, from 5.28% on Tuesday. In Asia, bond yields also eased after the U.S. Treasury’s announcement. Japan’s 10-year government bond yield fell to around 2.83% from more than 2.89% on Wednesday.
