A Chinese robotics start-up beat Nvidia on a global AI ranking. Is a new tech war brewing?

A Chinese robotics startup, Spirit AI, based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, has achieved a significant milestone in the global race for embodied artificial intelligence. On Wednesday, Spirit AI announced that its foundation model for embodied intelligence, Spirit v1.6, became the first from China to top the RoboArena global leaderboard. This development occurred shortly after US chip giant Nvidia launched its Cosmos 3 model, which is designed to enhance physical AI's decision-making capabilities. The competition to develop the AI systems for next-generation robots is emerging as a new area of technological rivalry between China and the United States, as AI increasingly moves beyond digital applications into the physical world.
