Chifagate

“Chifagate” is a political scandal in Peru involving former interim President José Jerí. Jerí, who had only been in office for four months, faced impeachment proceedings after security footage revealed undisclosed late-night meetings with Chinese businessmen at a Chinese restaurant. These businessmen reportedly held concessions for an energy project. The scandal, named “Chifagate” in reference to Chinese-Peruvian cuisine, sparked public outrage and accusations of corruption. Despite Jerí's denial of wrongdoing and claims of a smear campaign, Congress voted 75-24 to remove him from office. His ouster further destabilizes Peru, which has seen a succession of presidents removed from office in recent years, adding to the country's ongoing political turmoil ahead of upcoming elections.
