British National (Overseas)

British National (Overseas), or BN(O), is a status created for Hong Kong residents before the 1997 handover to China, offering a pathway to UK residency and eventual citizenship. BN(O) status and the associated visa scheme are newsworthy due to the ongoing political situation in Hong Kong and the UK's response. Recent developments include the UK expanding the BN(O) scheme to include Hongkongers who were minors in 1997, allowing them to apply independently of their parents. This expansion is partly a response to events like the sentencing of Jimmy Lai. While nearly 670 Hongkongers have settled in the UK under the BN(O) visa, application numbers have fallen short of initial government estimates. Despite this, the scheme remains relevant as a significant avenue for Hongkongers seeking to relocate to the UK, particularly in light of perceived erosion of freedoms in Hong Kong.
