French Alps

The French Alps are a mountain range popular for skiing and other winter sports. Recently, the region has been newsworthy due to a series of unfortunate events. A significant rise in avalanche deaths has been reported, with over 100 fatalities this season, attributed to weather conditions and underprepared skiers. Several avalanches have claimed the lives of British skiers in areas like La Grave and La Plagne, highlighting the dangers of off-piste skiing. In one instance, emergency teams intentionally triggered an avalanche near Chamonix as a safety precaution after a period of maximum alert. Additionally, a large fire at the Les Grandes Alpes hotel in Courchevel led to the evacuation of nearly 300 people. Despite these challenges, the French Alps remain relevant as a major tourist destination and will host ski mountaineering, a new Olympic sport, at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games in 2026.
