Gweiran Prison

Gweiran Prison, located in Hasakah province, northeastern Syria, is a facility holding approximately 8,000 men accused of being Islamic State (ISIS) fighters. The prison is currently under the control of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). It is newsworthy due to recent tensions and clashes erupting around the prison. These tensions arose following an agreement where the Kurdish-led militia was to hand over control of the prisons, including Gweiran, to the Syrian government. The Syrian military has also accused Kurdish forces of allowing IS-linked detainees to escape from the nearby al-Hol camp.
