Katanga

Katanga is a region in the southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It is currently newsworthy due to the emergence of a previously unknown armed group called "Debout Katanga pour la li..." (Stand Up Katanga for the...). This group's recent activity is causing concern among authorities in Kinshasa. Separately, Katanga is also connected to the historical assassination of Patrice Lumumba, the DRC's first prime minister, in 1961. A Belgian court has ruled that a 93-year-old former diplomat should stand trial for alleged complicity in Lumumba's murder, which occurred in the Katanga region. This decision brings renewed attention to Belgium's role in the events surrounding Lumumba's death and the early years of Congolese independence. The presence of a new armed group highlights ongoing security challenges in the region, while the Lumumba case underscores the lasting impact of colonial history and political violence on the DRC.
