La Courneuve

La Courneuve is a commune in the Seine-Saint-Denis department of France. Recently, it has been the focus of news due to the election of Aly Diouara from La France Insoumise (LFI) as mayor in March 2026. Diouara's victory was narrow, winning with 51.53% of the vote against his socialist rival Oumarou Doucouré. His win was supported by the PCF (French Communist Party). Since his election, Diouara has faced controversy. He was accused of racism by Marine Tondelier, leader of the EELV (Europe Ecology – The Greens) party, after Diouara responded to accusations against Bassi Konaté. Furthermore, Diouara faced criticism for using the slogan "Une ville, un peuple, un maire" (One city, one people, one mayor) in a social media post, which a National Rally (RN) deputy claimed echoed Nazi slogans. Diouara subsequently deleted the message. These events highlight the politically charged atmosphere surrounding the new mayor and the challenges facing La Courneuve.
