About

Malaba is a town located on the border between Uganda and Kenya. It is significant as the intended final destination of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension project, which aims to connect Mombasa, Kenya, to Uganda via rail. The project, initially financed by China, stalled six years ago but has recently been revived. Kenyan President William Ruto and Ugandan President Kaguta Museveni met near their shared border to relaunch the construction. The Kenyan section of the railway is being extended from Naivasha to Kisumu. The revival of the SGR project is newsworthy due to its potential to boost trade and economic development in the region, as well as the innovative financing mechanisms being used after renegotiating loans with China, replacing heavy sovereign debt.
