Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is a civilian airport located in Sri Lanka. It has recently become newsworthy due to two separate incidents. Firstly, Sri Lanka's President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the government denied a request from the United States to land two combat aircraft at the airport earlier in February. The request was reportedly made shortly before the US and Israel launched a war on Iran. Secondly, the airport is involved in the repatriation of the bodies of 84 Iranian sailors killed in a US torpedo attack in the Indian Ocean. The Sri Lankan defence ministry announced that the bodies would be flown home on Friday.
