The Mediterranean Sea is a sea located between Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is currently newsworthy due to two separate incidents. First, 19 migrants were found dead on a boat off the coast of Lampedusa, Italy, highlighting the ongoing crisis of migrants attempting to cross the sea to reach Europe. The deaths are attributed to hypothermia and hydrocarbon fume inhalation. Second, the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, deployed in the Mediterranean Sea, specifically near Cyprus, has had its location compromised due to a fitness tracking application (Strava) used by a member of the crew. This raises concerns about operational security and the potential for sensitive information to be inadvertently revealed. The Mediterranean Sea remains a significant geopolitical area, serving as a transit route for migrants and a site of naval deployments.
