Nara

Nara, Japan, is an ancient city known for its historic temples, gardens, and especially its free-roaming deer, traditionally considered sacred. Recently, Nara has been in the news due to two significant events. First, the deer population is expanding its range, with sightings reported as far as Osaka, approximately 40km away, raising questions about their changing habitat and food sources. Second, and more gravely, Nara is the location where former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated in July 2022. The trial of his assassin, Tetsuya Yamagami, concluded with a life sentence, bringing closure to a case that shocked Japan and the world. The assassination highlighted issues of gun violence and political ties to controversial religious groups in Japan, making Nara a focal point for national reflection.
