Obock

Obock is a locality in northern Djibouti, serving as a key departure point for migrants and refugees attempting to cross the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to reach Yemen. It is newsworthy due to a recent tragic shipwreck involving a vessel carrying over 300 migrants that departed from Obock. The incident, which occurred between March 24th and 25th, resulted in at least nine deaths and 45 missing individuals, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The Djiboutian coastguard launched a rescue operation, recovering 266 survivors. This event highlights the perilous nature of the migration route from Obock across the Bab el-Mandeb, recognized as one of the world's most dangerous. The IOM has warned that the deadliest season for this route is just beginning, underscoring Obock's continued relevance as a focal point in the ongoing migration crisis and the need for increased safety measures and humanitarian assistance.
