Quindalup is a tourist town located in southwestern Western Australia. It recently gained media attention due to a dramatic incident involving the Appelbee family, who were vacationing there. While kayaking and paddleboarding, Joanne Appelbee and her two younger children were swept out to sea. Her 13-year-old son, Austin, made the courageous decision to swim approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) back to shore to seek help. His four-hour swim in rough conditions and fading light is credited with saving his family. Marine rescue volunteers and police have lauded Austin's "superhuman" effort. WorkSafe WA is now making inquiries into the resort that hired out the watercraft to the family, and the resort is conducting a safety review. The incident highlights the potential dangers of water activities and the importance of safety measures.
