The community of South Shields, located in North East England, has been actively involved in a large-scale cleanup effort following a significant plastic pellet spill. Approximately a billion tiny plastic nurdles entered the River Tyne after a collision between two ships, the Wind Orca and the BG Orange, at the Port of Tyne. These nurdles, the raw material for plastic manufacturing, have spread widely, impacting local coastlines. In response, thousands of dedicated volunteers, including residents from areas like Seaburn, have mobilized with basic tools such as dustpans, brushes, buckets, and sieves to clean the affected beaches.
