Tarajal

Tarajal is a border area between Ceuta (a Spanish autonomous city in North Africa) and Morocco. It is newsworthy due to the recent discovery of sophisticated drug-smuggling tunnels originating in Morocco and leading into Ceuta. These tunnels are being used to transport hashish into Spain. The Spanish National Police recently uncovered one such tunnel, a complex underground infrastructure with multiple levels, rails, wagons, and pulley systems. The tunnel was found to be repurposing an abandoned hydraulic system originally designed for rainwater drainage. This discovery led to a large-scale operation resulting in 20 arrests in Ceuta. Prosecutors have requested pre-trial detention for 19 of those arrested. Authorities believe more tunnels of this type may exist in the Tarajal area due to its natural landscape and the existing water infrastructure, highlighting the ongoing challenge of combating drug trafficking across this border.
