Utsunomiya is a city located north of Tokyo, Japan, with a population of approximately half a million people. It recently gained significant attention due to an unusual event involving a stray bear. For three consecutive days, the city experienced multiple sightings of a medium-sized black bear, estimated to be about one meter long. These sightings, reported in various locations including a shopping arcade and near a park, prompted the local government to take extraordinary measures. As a result, all 94 public primary and junior high schools in Utsunomiya were closed on Monday. This decision was made to ensure the safety of students and staff while dozens of hunters and officials conducted an extensive search for the animal. The unprecedented nature of a bear being spotted within the city limits and the subsequent school closures made Utsunomiya newsworthy, highlighting the challenges of urban wildlife encounters.
