The International Energy Agency (IEA) is an autonomous intergovernmental organization of 32 member countries dedicated to ensuring reliable, affordable and clean energy for its member states and beyond. Recent news focuses on the IEA's response to a worsening energy crisis triggered by conflict in Iran and the Middle East, including attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The IEA considers the situation more severe than the oil crises of the 1970s. In response, the IEA coordinated a release of 400 million barrels of oil from member countries' strategic reserves, the largest such release in history. Spain, as a member, authorized the release of 11.5 million barrels from its reserves.
