About

The Forces démocratiques de libération du Rwanda (FDLR) is a Rwandan Hutu rebel group operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Formed by former members of the Rwandan armed forces and Interahamwe militia involved in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, the FDLR has been a destabilizing force in the region for decades. They are newsworthy due to ongoing efforts to disarm and reintegrate its members, as well as pressure from the Congolese army. Recently, the Congolese army has demanded the FDLR surrender their weapons, aligning with the Washington agreement between Kinshasa and Kigali. Simultaneously, Rwanda has reported the reintegration of over 200 individuals affiliated with rebel groups, including FDLR members, into Rwandan society after a period in a demobilization center. The FDLR's presence remains a significant security concern, impacting regional stability and relations between Rwanda and the DRC.
