Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims

The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), also known as Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), is a prominent jihadist alliance operating primarily in the Sahel region of West Africa. It was formed in 2017 through the merger of several militant groups, including Ansar Dine, the Macina Liberation Front, and al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb's Sahrawi branch. GSIM is affiliated with al-Qaeda and has pledged allegiance to its leaders. The group is currently highly newsworthy due to its persistent and often coordinated attacks across the region. Recent events include coordinated nationwide attacks in Mali that reportedly killed the defense minister and led to the capture of a key northern town by jihadist fighters and separatists. Additionally, GSIM or its affiliates are suspected of involvement in attacks like the one on Niger's airport and military airbase, which resulted in significant casualties among security forces and civilians. GSIM's current relevance lies in its significant destabilizing impact on the Sahel, contributing to widespread insecurity, displacement, and humanitarian crises, posing a major challenge to regional governments and international counter-terrorism efforts.
