Kataib Hezbollah

Kataib Hezbollah is an Iraqi armed group aligned with Iran. They are currently newsworthy due to their abduction of American freelance journalist Shelly Kittleson in Baghdad in late March. Kittleson, who has reported extensively in the Middle East, was kidnapped and held for approximately a week. Kataib Hezbollah announced they would release her on the condition that she immediately leave Iraq. She has since been freed, reportedly as a result of a deal. This incident highlights the ongoing influence of Iran-backed militias in Iraq and the precarious security situation for journalists operating in the region, especially as regional tensions escalate following attacks on Iran.
