KontraS

KontraS, or the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence, is a prominent Indonesian human rights organization known for its advocacy against the military's role in politics and for promoting democracy. The organization has recently gained attention due to an acid attack on its deputy coordinator, Andrie Yunus. Yunus sustained severe injuries in the attack, which occurred amidst broader concerns about democratic backsliding in Indonesia. In response to the attack, an Indonesian military court has sentenced four officers to jail terms ranging from 1.5 to 3 years. Prosecutors stated the officers were motivated by anger over Yunus's activism. This incident and the subsequent convictions highlight KontraS's ongoing relevance in defending human rights and civil liberties in Indonesia, particularly in challenging state power and advocating for accountability.
