Les Démocrates

Les Démocrates are the main opposition party in Benin. They are currently facing a significant internal crisis, making them newsworthy. This crisis involves a wave of resignations, a leadership succession battle following Boni Yayi's resignation as party leader on March 3rd, and surprising defections of former party figures to support rival candidates. Éric Houndété was recently ousted from his interim presidency of the party. Due to these internal struggles, Les Démocrates will not be fielding a candidate in the upcoming presidential election on April 12, 2026, and have decided not to endorse any other candidate. This significantly weakens the opposition's challenge to the incumbent president's movement, represented by Romuald Wadagni.
