National Resistance Movement

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) is the ruling political party in Uganda, led by President Yoweri Museveni. Museveni came to power in 1986 following an armed uprising. The NRM's continued dominance is newsworthy as Museveni recently won his seventh term as president, securing 71.65% of the vote in an election marred by reported delays and an internet blackout. The opposition has rejected the results, alleging vote rigging. Museveni's long tenure, initially marked by criticism of leaders clinging to power, now sees him seeking to extend his rule despite the fact that over three-quarters of the Ugandan population have only known him as president. The NRM's continued hold on power and the circumstances surrounding recent elections raise questions about democratic processes and leadership transitions in Uganda.
