Pakistan Taliban

The Pakistan Taliban (TTP), an armed group operating primarily in the northwest region of Pakistan near the Afghan border, is currently a major source of instability in the region. The TTP has claimed responsibility for attacks on Pakistani security forces, including a recent roadside bombing that killed three police officers in December 2025 and an attack on a checkpoint that killed six soldiers. These attacks have significantly heightened tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, leading to accusations and counter-accusations between the two countries. In March 2026, the conflict escalated dramatically, with Pakistan conducting strikes on an Afghan military facility in Kandahar in response to alleged Taliban drone attacks on Pakistani civilian and military targets. Afghanistan, in turn, accused Pakistan of targeting civilian homes in Kabul and Kandahar, resulting in casualties, including women and children. The escalating violence has triggered mass displacement, with tens of thousands of people fleeing Tirah in northwest Pakistan due to fears of an imminent military operation against the TTP. The situation is further complicated by the ongoing United States-Israel war on Iran, adding another layer of geopolitical complexity to the region.
