About
The Yugoslav War Crimes Tribunal, also known as the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), was established by the United Nations Security Council in 1993 to prosecute individuals responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide committed during the Yugoslav Wars. Its proceedings were based in The Hague. The tribunal recently gained attention due to the death of Ratko Mladic, a former Bosnian Serb military chief convicted of genocide and war crimes, including those related to the Srebrenica massacre. Mladic died in prison at the age of 84, having been sentenced by the tribunal. Serbia's president had previously criticized the UN court for not allowing Mladic to serve his sentence in Serbia or die at home. The tribunal concluded its work in 2017, with residual functions transferred to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals. Its legacy lies in holding perpetrators accountable and establishing facts about the conflicts.
