Baby Jane Allas

Baby Jane Allas was a domestic helper in Hong Kong who became the subject of a significant legal case after being diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer. In 2019, she was dismissed by her employer, Jamil Bushra, following her diagnosis. Tragically, she later died from the illness. The case gained prominence as Hong Kong's Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) took up the matter, launching legal proceedings in 2020 under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance. The EOC sought compensation for Allas's family, arguing her dismissal constituted discrimination. Recently, a Hong Kong court concluded the years-long legal battle by awarding over HK$251,000 (approximately US$32,000) to Allas's family. This ruling highlights the legal protections against discrimination for domestic workers, particularly when facing serious illness, and underscores the importance of fair treatment and compensation for vulnerable employees.
