Jamil Bushra

Jamil Bushra is an employer in Hong Kong who recently lost a legal battle concerning the dismissal of a domestic helper, Baby Jane Allas. In 2019, Allas was diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer and subsequently sacked by Bushra. She later died from the illness. The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) initiated legal proceedings against Bushra in 2020 under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance. On Friday, a Hong Kong court awarded over HK$251,000 (approximately US$32,000) to the family of the late helper as damages. This ruling concludes a years-long legal dispute and highlights the legal protections available to domestic workers in Hong Kong, particularly in cases of illness and discrimination.
