Deniz Göktaş

Deniz Göktaş is a Turkish stand-up comedian who has been placed under arrest by a court in Istanbul after his performance was deemed to have incited hatred and hostility. This incident is part of a broader crackdown on dissent in Turkey, particularly in the run-up to the NATO summit in Ankara. The arrests and restrictions on public life are seen as an attempt to suppress criticism of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Turkish government's stance on Islam. Göktaş' case highlights the challenges faced by comedians and free speech advocates in Turkey, where the boundaries between humor and offense can be easily blurred. His arrest has garnered significant attention online, with his performance attracting 9.4 million views on YouTube.
