Eiko Kawasaki

Eiko Kawasaki is a Japanese citizen of Korean heritage who, at age 17, was among tens of thousands lured to North Korea in the 1960s by promises of a 'paradise on Earth.' These individuals, often with Korean ancestry, were enticed by a North Korean propaganda scheme promising a better life. However, upon arrival, they faced harsh conditions, including forced labor and denial of basic human rights. Kawasaki's experience is now in the spotlight due to a recent Tokyo court ruling ordering the North Korean government to compensate her and other plaintiffs for the hardships they endured. The court ordered Pyongyang to pay 88 million Japanese yen to four people, including Kawasaki, who were victims of this scheme. While the ruling is largely symbolic due to the unlikelihood of North Korea complying, it highlights the ongoing issue of North Korea's deceptive practices and the suffering of those who were misled.
