Hakmiyeh Ibrahim

Hakmiyeh Ibrahim is an Australian citizen with links to the Islamic State (IS) group. She is one of 34 Australian women and children who have been held in the Roj camp in northern Syria for nearly seven years, since IS lost its last territorial foothold in 2019. These individuals are relatives of suspected ISIL (ISIS) fighters. Ibrahim is newsworthy because she was recently part of a group released from the Roj camp with the intention of returning to Australia. However, the group was turned back by Syrian authorities for "technical reasons" and forced to return to the camp. Following this, the Australian government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, has announced that it will not assist in repatriating these individuals. Australia has also issued a ban preventing Ibrahim from returning to the country for up to two years, based on security advice. This situation highlights the complex legal and ethical challenges governments face when dealing with citizens associated with terrorist organizations abroad.
