Hamid Karzai

Hamid Karzai is the former president of Afghanistan, serving from December 2001 to September 2014. He led the country during a tumultuous period following the U.S.-led invasion that ousted the Taliban. Karzai's presidency was marked by efforts to rebuild the nation, establish democratic institutions, and combat the resurgent Taliban insurgency. He was a key figure in international discussions regarding Afghanistan's future and security. Recently released evidence from a public inquiry has highlighted that during the early part of the last decade, Karzai, as president, voiced significant concerns to NATO commanders about Afghan civilians being killed by British special forces (SAS) during their deployment. This complaint was described as "muscular" and indicated a growing tension between Afghan leadership and international forces operating in the country, even as Afghan partner forces were reportedly withdrawing.
