Herman Melville

Herman Melville (1819-1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period. He is best known for his novel *Moby-Dick* (1851), a story about a whaling voyage and a captain's obsessive quest for a white whale. Melville is newsworthy due to recent scientific observations of sperm whale behavior that appear to validate aspects of his fictional depiction of whale aggression.
