Jonathan is a giant tortoise, estimated to be 193 or 194 years old, making him the oldest known land animal in the world. He resides on the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. He has lived through major historical events, including two World Wars and the invention of the telephone and the automobile. Jonathan is currently newsworthy because he was recently the target of a viral cryptocurrency scam. On April 1st, an X (formerly Twitter) account impersonating his veterinarian, "Joe Hollins," falsely reported his death. This fake news was then picked up and disseminated by several major news outlets, including the BBC, Daily Mail, and USA Today before being debunked. The scam aimed to capitalize on Jonathan's fame to promote cryptocurrency. Despite the hoax, Jonathan is alive and well.
