About

Juan Arroyo is the former manager of the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO), Spain's National Cancer Research Center. He is currently under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office and the National Police for an alleged embezzlement of between 25 and 30 million euros over a 17-year period. The investigation was triggered by accusations from two former senior officials at CNIO. Arroyo was reportedly protected by an "unusual" contract put in place by scientist Mariano Barbacid. Further complicating matters, Barbacid and Arroyo share a business address for their private ventures, also shared with a company implicated in the alleged fraud. Arroyo has since been dismissed from his position at CNIO along with two subordinates as a result of the investigation. The case is significant due to the large sum of money involved, the potential misuse of public funds intended for cancer research, and the implication of prominent figures within the scientific community.
