Karoline Edtstadler

Karoline Edtstadler is the governor of Salzburg and, in that capacity, also serves as the head of the board (Kuratoriumsvorsitzende) of the prestigious Salzburg Festival. She is a member of the conservative ÖVP party. Edtstadler is currently newsworthy due to her role in the abrupt departure of Markus Hinterhäuser, the festival's artistic director (Intendant). Following a board meeting, Edtstadler initially announced a forthcoming discussion regarding Hinterhäuser's future. However, the decision to terminate his contract was made swiftly thereafter, leading to what is described as the festival's biggest crisis since World War II. The dismissal and the preceding conflict between the board and Hinterhäuser have cast a shadow over the Salzburg Festival, raising concerns about its future and reputation as a leading international cultural event.
